What Is The Difference Between DVI-I And DVI-D

You can’t plug a DVI-I connector into a DVI-D port, but you can plug a DVI-D connector into a DVI-I port. The difference between the two connectors is in their encoding. A monitor with a digital input either HDMI or Display Port could accept either type of signal, but a monitor with only an analog input can accept a DVI-I signal, not a DVI-D signal.


A DVI-I connector contains pins for both analog and digital signals, but a DVI-D connector contains only the digital pins. Analog and digital signals differ in how they encode color. Digital encoding can carry more data than analog encoding, so it results in a sharper image with less noise than an analog signal would produce. Analog does not carry enough data to reproduce fine details, so text using an analog signal might look jagged.

Digital is the only way to reliably reproduce images at extremely high resolutions, such as 2560 x 1600 or 4K Ultra HD.

What are the different types of DVI connector?

Basically, there are three different types of DVI connectors, DVI-D, DVI-I, and DVI-A.

DVI-D: DVI-D stands for Digital DVI. It has 24 pins and carries only digital signals.

DVI-I: DVI-I stands for Integrated DVI. It has 29 pins and can carry both analog & digital signals.

DVI-A: DVI-A stands for Analog DVI. It has 29 pins and can carry analog signals only.

A DVI-I connector looks like a DVI-D connector with one extra pin in the middle. The extra pin carries a second analog channel for “enhanced” DVI-I signals, but some computer graphics cards use the extra channel as a fourth digital channel instead of an additional analog channel.

This made it impossible to plug those graphics cards into a monitor that only had one analog input, so VESA introduced a newer DVI connector design to resolve the problem.

A DVI-A connector looks like a DVI-I connector with one less pin in the middle. The missing pin carries a second analog channel, but it does not have pins for the fourth digital channel because it is not used.

DVI-I connector is used for digital monitors, DVI-D connector is used for devices such as set-top boxes and DVD/Blu-ray players and DVI-A connector is most often found on a laptop.
